About this mandala coloring page

A mandala that doubles as a freshly baked pie. The center is a woven lattice top, with strips of dough passing over and under each other just like a real hand-woven crust, each strip scored down the middle. Around the lattice sits a ring of sixteen pastry leaves, the cut-outs bakers press onto the edge of a pie. Then comes a ring of small round beads, a band of rounded petals and a gently waving rim that looks like a crimped edge or a fluted pie dish. Fan shapes fill the four corners of the page. With 311 regions it is a detailed mandala, and the lattice in particular rewards patience: color the over strips and the under strips in two close shades and the weave pops right off the page. It is a sweet, slightly playful page for anyone who spends the holiday thinking about dessert.

Coloring tips

Use golden brown, honey and light tan for the crust, and let the small gaps in the lattice show a filling color: deep red for cherry, orange for pumpkin or purple for blueberry. Shade the pastry leaves a little darker toward their tips, as if they browned in the oven. A cream or soft blue on the petal ring makes it look like the pie is sitting on a pretty plate.
